Go to Home Depot and get a Wagner wallpaper steamer. It generates ~4x as much steam as my old kettle-on-a-hotplate setup did (based on water consumed per hour). It's also self-contained, thermostatically controlled and has a long enough hose that you can position it out of the way and you won't have to worry about kicking it or tripping over it. The whole thing is about the size of a car battery. As you can probably tell, I really like mine.
