I have a plan in my head now thanks to the responses. It has been raining this week so any after work progress has been squashed. In the meantime I am going to put my idea on paper. It combines my already assembled ply stack coaming with a vertical strip recess. I'll post a scan of the sketch. I am quite excited to see how it will work out.
