Hello Jim,
The only benefit I know of is for layback while rolling. There is no exit for trapped water other than being sloshed or tipped out. I did think about the fact that this assembly is very boxy on the inside. It could be uncomfortable. Unfortunately my experience is limited to sit on tops at this time so I'm a bit unsure how comfortable or uncomfortable it might be. Maybe I could glue some padding to it?
