Paddle: I screwed it up. Can I fix or do I start over?

I am making a euro paddle, and have made a signifigant miscalculation. I made a hollow shaft by cutting a 2x2 in half and routered out the center, then glued it back together. After I did this I decided that I wanted a slightly shorter paddle, so I cut a few inches off of one end of the shaft (bringing the hollow part of the shaft too close to the end of the paddle.

To make a long story short....

When I was blending the shaft into the paddle blade I have cut into the hollow part of the shaft.

My question is this. Can I fix it or do I just have to throw it away and start over? I was thinking that I could probably plane the shaft down quite a bit opening the gap even more, then stuff a piece of wood with a bunch of thickened epoxy into the hollow part, and then laminate another piece of wood back over this. I would probably also add a bit of glass to the shaft in this section to add a bit of extra strength.

Any thoughts?
