Hi Lennie. Good suggestions so far. You might examine the blade edge under a magnifying glass or jeweler's loupe to make sure it's really sharp. Also cutting end-grain can be tricky and you have to keep the blade backed way off; especially when the workpiece starts to smooth out. You're going to get powder or thin slices of wood not curly ribbons. Skewing the tool, as Dan suggests can help a lot. I remember my knuckles hit the strongback sometimes too and I did some of the work with a block plane and a finger plane.
