Most spokeshaves and bench planes have a blade that is set at 45 degrees to the sole. Block planes and some others have blades that are at 20 degrees or 12 degrees to the sole. Both types of planes have a bevel angle of approximately 30
degrees but the 'shaves and the bench planes have the bevel facing down while in the block planes the bevel faces up. All these tools have limitations because of wood type, grain direction etc. That's why the old time craftsmen had such a wide array of each type hand tool. Your problem may not be caused by the tool itself but by a wrong choice of tools. When in doubt grab another tool until you find one that works.
