You got great responses to your question, and you should be able to use your strips, even on a S&G (deck). Have you looked at CLC's Chesapeake 14 or 16. A stripped deck hybrid may be just what you're looking for. The hull goes together fairly quickly from plans and then you can use your strips on the deck. The Grebe that was recommended would also be a great choice for a hybrid. For a full-on strip built, look at any of Nick's designs or Vaclav at One Ocean. Most of these designs can been scaled down in length to reduce volume/weight and even take some height down (or flatten the deck slightly) for smaller/lighter paddlers (just make sure it remains "fair"). Last weekend my youngest son (age 7) tried out my Chesapeake 16. This is way too big for him now, but will probably be perfect in several more years (after my daughters get their use out of it). His experience in this photo was kept limited to a short stern rope tied to the dock and never got more than 20-30 feet away (I took the picture in my swim shorts ready to dive in). No worries. He had a blast, but needs a much smaller boat and a few more years of swimming lessons.
