: It's in the September/October 2002 issue. (If you think you want to order
: it.)
Not for what they charge for back issues!
: I don't have the issue infront of me so I'm working from memory.
: Essentially, he does 3 things.
: 1. He replaces the 'issue' blade with one with a flattened back. I beleive
: one of the vendors he mentions is Hock. (The blade is more expensive than
: the 'shave though)
Hock blades are supposed to be outstanding, if a bit pricy. It's possible to flatten the back of the stock blade, but the steel is pretty soft and it doesn't hold an edge that well.
: 2. He trues the bed of the spokeshave with epoxy using the back of the new
: blade to ensure it's flat, and making sure the blade doesn't rest on the
: adjusting screws.
Good idea!
: 3. He manufactures a new chipbreaker/? using brass sock to make it fit flush
: to the blade.
I filed the stock one until it was flat, which definitely helped, but it's not a well-made part.
His mods make sense, based on my experience with the Record 'shave. But at that point, it would make even more sense to sell it and buy a better tool, since all you really have left of the original is the body and a couple of knobs.
