I couldn't wait to paddle my Tern 14 so I skipped varnishing it for 2 months. Now the UV protection deadline is here but the bottom has a thousand scratches and dings from use (and abuse- I decided not to 'baby' it). Is there anything I can do to clean these scratches up before I encase them in varnish like a prehistoric insect in amber?

Also, I'm wondering if I should add some protection to the bottom after seeing how much damage it received in only 2 months. I am thinking about applying 4 oz s-glass to the football but I would hate to add the weight and expense if it wouldn't help the problem.
