Just a thought...Since the ply seems to be cracking at the wire holes, do you think you can use strapping tape to hold the stems together? Will it crack without the wires? I built a Severn and it required a lot of pressure to close the ends. I used wire in the 1/8" lauan as well as some bar clamps across the shears to pull it together. I think I had some cracking too.
