I am building a Little Auk from guillemot in Hobart,(thought i would start with something small). 1st try but going pretty well so far, I have not had much trouble yet (have stripped the hull). I am using king billy pine (light soft and a nice red brown)for main strips and celery top pine (harder to work and a little chippy but a beautiful gold) and myrtle (pink and cream) for trim. Celery is still pretty cheap and easily available as is myrtle, king billy a little more expensive and not so easily available, (mine was cut 30 years ago by the Hydro). The 2 pines are traditional boat building timbers in Tasmania so I was keen to follow that tradition. I can give you emails to suitable timber merchants down here if you like.
