: I have heard that two layers of 4oz glass, on the hull would be stronger and
: add less weight to the boat than one layer of 6oz glass.
: Is this due to the 6oz glass wicking more epoxy?
I think 2 layers of 4 oz is stronger than a single layer of 6 oz, but futher, it's my understanding that 2 layers of 4 oz is stronger than 1 layer of 8 oz. I don't know about the weight, though. I think a 6 oz layup is one of the more common layups (in my limited experience, anyway) so if you are going light weight, 2 layers of 4 oz may be too much. Perhaps a single layer of 4 for a light layup or a single layer of 6 oz for a standard layup.
My home waters are very shallow with lots of submerged obstacles that are covered in sharp barnacles, so I'm going with a 6 oz layer in the football, or a double 6 oz layer for extra abrasion resistance... haven't completely decided yet.
Hope that helps.
