Rick,

Instead of a second layer of glass for abrasion resistance, why not cover the bottom with a layer of an abrasion resistant mix of epoxy resin and aluminum, or epoxy resin and graphite powder? You could mask off the area you want reinforced and put on two coats, which would fill the weave, then use clear epoxy for filling the weave on the rest of the fiberglass work.

Jsut a thought
