: Paul et al. Thanks for the info. My brother in law wants to use this strictly
: for training. No sight seeing for him. I like the Idea of the extra thwart
: and the seat deal. As he would like to use it to train alone as well. This
: is a clean through crack. Kevlar and everything. I will indeed need to
: replace the broken gunwale and make an ample patch. Thanks again folks.
: Keep building, Elliott

If you want to do your patching with kevlar, you can buy a single yard from Defender (http://www.defender.com or http://www.defender.com/cgi-bin/Web_store/web_store.cgi?keywords=kevlar&frames=yes&store=yes) for about $27.

Fibreglast has 1 inch wide kevlar tapes (10 yards for $22) as well as 2 inch and 3 inch wide tapes if you want to go that way with your patches.

Since the crack goes all the way through, you may have some difficulty getting the edges aligned properly. Kevlar is supposed to be a real pain to trim, but you might try using a hot knife or the tip of a soldering iron to remove any overhanging frizzies that might prevent the side pieces from aligning properly.

If you do this carefully you might even be able to get a series of small spot welds along the lenght of the crack. these will have neglgible strength, but they might be strong enough to hold the edges of the crack in alignment at least long enough for you to slap a patch on the inside. Otherwise it is going to be a tricky job to align things with clamps, and you don't even want to think about coming back and sanding down a bad joint.

Best of luck
