: Do you have a quick primer on making rolling bevels?

I go both ways. For complex shapes, I get better joints with hand beveled strips. For simple shapes, cove and bead is quicker.

To make the rolling bevel, I start by having all the forms numbered where I can read it. I dry fit the new strip against the existing fit and mark the number of each form on the strip where it crosses the form. In this way I can find the location of the strip without realigning the full length. As I'm marking the crossing I'm check the joint between the new and existing strip, looking to see if the gap gets wider or narrower as it goes.

I start beveling at one end, working down the length of boat. I hold the strip in place and estimate the size of the gap. I then hold my block plane to try to recreate the same size gap and start planing. As I get close I check the fit. Again when I go to plane I try to match the gap. When I get the bevel correct around the region of one form I move on to the next form.

In this way I get the bevel right at each form and try to blend between the forms.

Get your plane as sharp as possible and don't try to remove too much wood at a time
