Hi Glen, I did my deck with square-edge strips and also the edges of the decorative accent strip on the hull. You can get tight joints using any method. The nice thing about square-edge is you are doing it as you go. I used rabbet planes that make it easy to work right up against the station molds; that made cutting the winding bevel child's play. Square-edge is not that much more time consuming because cedar is so easy to plane that way along a 1/4" edge. Be aware that the bevels can become concave on deck and when you get to the bottom football depending how you do it. That makes the planing more complex. I got around it by making a crude rabbet/compass plane. It ended up working great though and I use it any time I have to shave a concave area. Good luck with it.
