: An uncle of mine was by today and took a look at a frame I've resently
: completed. We talked a bit about covering it and he suddenly suggested a
: rubber cloth that is used to cover flat roofs. He said the seams can be
: glued and ironed watertight, and he found it to be durible.
: I was a bit concerned about weight, but he reasured me it came pretty thin,
: and I got to thinking about the anual coat of paint fabrics would be
: require.
: Has anyone ever used this material (sorry I don't know its correct name) or
: know its properties? What do you think of useing this?

Tyler:
I have this material on a section of my house. It does seem to work well as a roof material. But, even as thin as it is, it's still pretty heavy.
I don't think it would conform well to a boat shape. You can cut and glue it but you;d have to put darts all over. It might feel like you were sitting in an inner tube?
I've kept part of roll thinking that it might come in handy for something some day but IMHO your frame would be better with poly, nylon,or canvas.

If you do try it ,I'd love to hear about the results. Part of the joy of kayak building for me is designing something that works out of unrelated stuff.
Just as I can't look at a pile of lumber without thinking of paddles and strips,
A walk through an accessory aisle makes me wonder how items could be used on a kayak for rigging or hatches etc.

Ohh, its a weird disease!!
