I'd agree. With a rubber coating, there's little chance it would be able to stretch enough to avoid using darts.

Also, if you use 12-ounce nylon with varnish, the recoat age is significantly longer than a year. People on this board have mentioned going for 5 to 7 years without having to recoat. I've only got a little over a year on mine, but it's holding up very well. There are a couple of spots on the ends that have scraped off from rolling the boat over on the grass to pour out rinse water, but otherwise it's perfect. And if I'd bothered to put some endcaps on like the Greenlanders do, it wouldn't have happened in the first place.
