In Response To: Skin-on-Frame: Wood question (Brian Ervin)

: After reading the Morris book on SOF building the desire to build is
: overwhelming. I plan to builf the Greenland version.

: I am however confused a/b the type of wood needed. I have easy access to
: roughcut, nondried cypress. Is this wood appropriate for the construction
: of the gunwales, ribs, etc...

: Thanks in advance for the response.

Good project!

Never used Southern swamp cypress myself. Understand it can vary quite a bit in weight. Quite lightweight but still strong enough kayaks can be built from swamp cypress. Very good wood for the longitudinals ( make sure the gunnels have equal flex )and some deck beams . Not sure if I would use it for the masik or the backrest deckbeam. Don't think I would use it for ribs. Use straight grained white oak for ribs, don't use red oak as it is much more rot prone than white oak.

Have fun
