Hey Mick,
Thanks for the suggestions. The knobs that I used on my hatches are much smaller than the ones shown in the pics, about 1 1/4 inches in diameter and as low profile as I could make them. They were thin enough that I thought I had better ad a layer of glass to the top and bottom to give them the structural strenght to stand up to the task.
I love the screw down hatchlids just because thay are so darn secure. I have plans for totally recessed allen(relation?) key type bolts for the Cormorant I have planned for myself after I finish the Grebe that is in the works for the kids.
Thanks again for the ideas, I'll bounce mine off you when the time comes. You always seem to be able to figure out how to build a better mouse trap
Ken
: if that works, why not keep the groove but put it under the knob so that it
: is depressed. say 2 or 4 finger holes in the knob sides.
: or same thing but make slightly raised larger knob and depress a small
: compass into the top of that(probably too much but might look ok),knob
: would just look like (and be) the compass hsg.
: or at the very, very, very least, reverse that blobby knob profile so that it
: cannot catch and the underside fits the deck profile when closed(ie the
: base would be the large diameter). the openability will hardly be lessened
: and it will look and blend more like for a kayak and less like for a chest
: of drawers.
