: Hi,

: I'm about to start work on my Night Heron kayak...finally! I have access to
: plenty of free mahagony, but I don't know if it will be tough to work
: with. Anyone have any experience or suggestions?

There was man as in Harry Potter, Who shall not be named, built Kayaks out of !/8" strips, very nice work, bed side manor left lots to be desired. On the Ocean One site he has a strip calc to use and you could put some # to the strip wieght issue. Most of mahagony is not as heavy as the old stuff. There are many types. Pick and choose. My son was going to try water ballast in his Artic Tern so I say try to build light to carry to the car:)On the trips with other kayakers you get to bring the beer. I have Guillemont Standard and have seen but not paddled the great looking NH. Save some wood and build a Guillemont Play 2nd for the day paddles:)
