I cut the pattern in with a pair of utility knife blades clamped across a thin strip. The cut was made through the hull and 1/4 x 1/8 strips of walnut were set in. I posted a composite picture a while back -

I ended up with several gaps that I patched over (I don't think I'm supposed to admit that ), but it still turned out pretty good.

As for the design itself, that started with sketches and ended up in an Excel spreadsheet with a full size plot. I've been thinking about writing up how I did that, but haven't gotten it done yet. The spreadsheet allowed me to tweak curves, gaps, angles and sizes until I got what I wanted.
