If you haven't skinned it yet, you could pull out the old beam, and make a match without the tenons. Then mortise the deck beam ends and make two much longer tenons (well, tenon inserts) to slide into the mortise from the outside of the gunwhales. A little glue in the deck beam mortises to hold the insesrts in, and you'd be set to go...
