So build the Cormorant as a 17-footer? If you're really interested in the whole slew of Greenland techniques, especially rolling, you don't necessarily need to go wider to gain sufficient volume. A lot of the Greenland kayaks went longer for more volume, yet kept very low decks and narrow beams.

However, for playing in rough water, you sometimes want a shorter boat (but still rollable)...the Brit playboats like the Romany and Anas Acuta are 20.5" to 21" wide, only 16' long, and carry a bit more volume in height than do traditional Greenland kayaks.

This probably raises more questions than it does answers, but it's food for thought!

Actually, a couple of us plan to do some plans for an anthropometrically-scaled S&G kayak...stay tuned!
