Hi Ken, here's how I would do it. I would put a mark on each side where I wanted the hole to be (maybe make a carboard template). Then I would drill in from each side with a 1/16" twist bit or gimlet. Then I would put the gimlet or a bamboo skewer (boat-kabob?) through both holes to check the alignment. If everything checks out I would put the point of a forstner bit on the pilot hole and drill through from each side. I've had forstner bits drift sideways even when they have a pilot hole to follow so the safest way would be to drill the hole a tiny bit small and then enlarge it with files or sandpaper-covered doweling.
It's one way to go anyhow. Good luck with it.
