: News on the hybrid qajariaq: I wanted one of those fancy recesses that you
: see 'molded in' on glass boats. I decided to attempt to lay up the recess
: and coaming lip all at once. I did it all in one monumental effort,

: The steps were: Saw out the deck hole to the desired opening dimension, plus
: the layup thickness. Partially saw the desired recess dimension.

: Determine the lip height. I used the top of the deck as a tool, except at the
: sides, where I built it up about 1/4". Mask with tape.

: Build tool down on underside of deck. I used minicel foam as a tool here.
: Determine the height where the sprayskirt goes; I used 3/4 inches. Surform
: and sand tool to that thickness. Sand bevel at outside, running to deck
: underside. Soften all corners with sandpaper. Mask.

: Lay up 5.8oz carbon twill / E-glass layers/ 5.8oz carbon twill. All was
: precut, on the bias. I used a combination of layers about 50 ounces thick.

: Close the windows and let the attic go to 110 degrees.

: When cured, cut out the partially sawed cut with a razor knife. The
: recess/coaming and the tool comes out as a unit. Sand off all the sharp
: edges so you don't cut yourself. Break out the cedar tooling, pull out all
: the foam and tape.

: Mark, rout, and sand desired lip width. Same for the internal gluing flange.

: Bevel the deck at the recess edge. Glue from the bottom.

: That's all I did so far. I still want to fillet and tape the joint on the
: inside outside, and pretty it up.

: This is not the best picture, but you can just make out the width of the lip
: where the camera flash is reflected. The lip underside is at deck level at
: the front and back, and raised 1/4 inch at the sides.
