Why, indeed. I made some hatch frames just as you suggest. But the cloth did not have to do much turning, as all the tight corner edges against the gasket/tool were accomplished by (as Kurt Maurer would say) filling with schmoo.

This process is pretty much what is described in Nick's book, and on Vaclav's site.
