Varnish Rotissorie

J.J.:

Here's another tip from a newbie builder. I too had used the hang from the cockpit method. But what I didn't like was that the yak is in perpetual motion. So I tied stabilizing chords off to the side to limit movement. But this was a pain in the butt stepping around all these chords

Then it came to me. A moment of brilliance. A varnish rotissorie. That's right a varnish rotissorie. Here's how it works (I should of taken a picture!)

Bolt a 2' piece of a 2x4 to your sawhorse. Drill a 3/8 hole (thru the 2" side) 4" from the top for your spinning hole. To this, (using a 3/8 bolt), connect 3 pieces of 2x4x8 which are screwed together to form a "C". Like a 3 sided box. At the open end of the "C", drill holes thru the 2x4's which a 10 inch carriage bolt will slide thru which your yak will hang from thru the toggle carry holes. Envision this 3 sided "C" spinning from the upright 2x4. (Rinse and repeat for the other end.) And there you have it!!! A varnish rotissorie.

It didn't spin as freely as I had hoped. There was a lot of torque for my Guillemot double to be hanging on by these 2 bolts. But it allowed me access to the entire boat, spin it over to do the other side, was very stable, and made varnishing a much easier task than the hanging rope trick. The post of painting the bottom side to remove dust was RIGHT ON!!! Virtually no dust when you varnish on the bottom. Less sanding between coats. As Marth Stewart would say, "Thats a good thing."

Hope this description made sense. Too bad I threw it away just 2 days ago as I completed my varnishing. If anyone wants a picture of this, it would take 10 minutes to rebuild it for a picture. That's the least I could for the hours of advice that I had recieved from all of you at this great BB.

Install the deck lines and launching of the Guillemot Double Next week.
Stay tuned!!
