: Looking for advice from anyone who has refinished a yak from a traditional
: varnish to System 3 LPU. I am planning to sand the old varnish off getting
: the surface back to a matte look. I have never done this before. Anything
: to look out for, any lessons learned to pass on? What grit is required to
: cut through 4 coats of 2 year old Captains varnish?

Bob "Ootek" Warren sprayed a couple of my boats for me. One was sanded down to matte with 120 grit.

The other had a flow coat of epoxy, which was scuffed with a ScotchBrite pad.

S3LPU is pretty revealing. The fully sanded kayak took a lot more coats to cover up the swirls.

The flowcoated, and roughed, boat came out shinier and more beautiful.

If your varnish is well-adhered, I wouldn't try to sand it down to epoxy and glass.
