Nice pictures. I've done the varnish/sanding thing both ways, and think you get a better result if you sand lightly after each coat. It's too easy to slap on about three or four coats and then realize that there are a few runs or sags that you didn't pick up early on, and are now more of a problem as you've added more varnish over them. You don't need a lot of sanding -- and yes, use wet sandpaper -- to identify the few runs you want to address in each coat.

In the end, borrow a buffer and make your boat shine.
