HI, all-All the sign work is out of the basement, I have a light week at my other day gig, and I'm gonna get the strongback up by the end of the weekend, so I guess it's time to ask for an answer to my chief conundrum, namely what's the best way to scarf short strips into long ones? I'll have to make big ones out of little ones, the longest strip I have is 8'. I did a test scarf a while ago with some 1/4" samples, used a stationary disc sander with 60 grit to make the angles (45 degrees) and clamped them against a straight edge, glued with Titebond II. Next day they came apart at the joint with just a little bending. I'll be using 3/16" strips for the boat (North Star); would an 8 to 1 angle be better? Would a planed scarf work better than a sanded one? It seems to me that the smoother surface of a planed scarf would suck up less glue than the rough surface of the sanded one; I suspect that the overly thirsty end grain on my test strips could be part of the problem. Any wisdom regarding scarfing strips as I apply them would also be most welcome as well. Thanks.-Greg
