I also started with a 8 to 1 pre scarfed strips made on the table saw jig,then used a home made disk sander on the kayak scarf. On the next kayak we will only make 4 starters then go to on the form scarfs. When we faired the hull and deck the were all tite.We did them on the sander with just layout lines and no jigs.
If you get fancy on the deck you may also have to make starters for a fair curve.
