I use a belt sander to create scarfs, similar to Nick's book. My guess is that they are approximtely 5:1. Wood glue is applied to both surfaces, then I let them soak for 30 seconds to a minute before clamping.
The strips are on their edge when clamped (standing 3/4" tall) so that they are perfectly straight.
I agree with the earlier post about only scarfing full-length strips for the dozen or so that go near the shear, as I find it easier to work with half-strips and glue them together on the forms.
