Ordinarily I don't scarf the strips. I use butt joints. BUT...in some areas like the sheer lines, decks, etc. where I want it to be very fair, or look really good I will scarf. To make the scarf I simply clamp two strips together and cut at a steep angle on one end with a 12 point handsaw. Then I reverse one of the strips, apply glue, clamp...and wait. Works very well and I don't have to work to any specific angle.
