I used the same technique. On the Prospector canoe, I'm using scarfs across the width of the strips.

On my Guillemot, I used scarfs across the thickness of the strip (like John did)..but didn't have a miter box, so cut them all by eye. You need a lot more closely matching grain for these scarfs.
