Greg,
I used the sander method as discribed in Nick's book. A mark on the sander bed helps produce consistant joints. My set up yielded 8:1 scarfs. A square mark on the face helps keep the joint straight. I glued the scarfs together on the boat. I used b/c strips. I glued the scarf at the same time as I glued the strip to the previous one. Clamp the scarf with a binder clip or clothes pin. I placed a 1/4" dowel in the cove to line things up (waxed paper under the dowel to keep from sticking).
The joints come out well, especially if you are carefull to select strips of the same grain.
