abrasion is one thing,,,dings and little impacts that compress the wood and stretch the fabric to failue is another thing. I've got one kayak with 6oz e-glass with tiny fractures in the glass that didn't compress the wood but did allow water stains,,another kayak with 4oz s-glass did get dings that compressed the wood but didn't fracture the glass with less waterstaining.

The stuff is better but it doesn't wet out as clear, costs more,, and careful layups of regular e-glass will come up with a more economical solution with just a little more weight.
I did three 4mm ply test panels,,,one with 4oz s-glass on both sides and one with 4oz e-glass on both sides and one with 6oz e-glass on both sides. Bending with the grain with my foot against the panel leaning on a step: The 4oz e-glass fractured easily with wood and glass breaking completely. The 4oz s-glass bent all the way without the wood breaking outside the weave,,yes the wood was breaking internally, the glass threads were whitening everywhere in parallel lines but the wood pretty much bent into a half ellipse without fracturing through. The 6oz panel required A LOT more effort to bend and break but when it did break it was catastrophic with shards of wood holding the panel togher and the glass broken completely. In blunt and piercing impacts the fracture patterns in the s-glass were roughly random and traveled about 1/2 the distance away from the hole or impact. I the e-glass the fracture patterns followed the orienttion of the threads.
