Thanks for all of the advice from the board. I did the next coat of varnish, thinned aprox 10% and it worked MUCH better. I still have a few areas that weren't great, but I think that those were a result of poor technique more than anything else. The good news is that I have a few more coats to work out the flaws in my brushing.
