Here is a pic of a redwood framed Dyson I built several years ago.
The redwood was left over from a stripper project. I was leary
of using it as it is certainly softer than the SPF you mention.
However, this non-tradition frame has provided many years of
excellent service to it's current owner. The gunwales are about
2" X 3/4" and the stringers 3/4" square. If I hadn't used
it, I probably wouldn't recommend it. But now, I wouldn't hesitate
to use it again.
