Linseed oil penetration

Only the first coat is going to penetrate significantly. Even if thinned, you get very little penetration (Maybe .020" is some woods), except on end grain. Once the first coat seals the pores of the wood, subsequent coats cannot penetrate any further, but they will gradually fill the pores resulting in a smoother finish.
