I've never read Nick's book (though I will one of these days), nor have I even seen another kayak with hatches, raised or otherwise...except in pictures and on the internet. In fact, in person, I've only seen one other wood kayak period. All my life I've been building boats and kayaks. I thought I was just about the only weird person in the world building wood kayaks...and canoes. It wasn't until 5 or 6 years ago, while on the internet, that I discovered there are a few other wood kayak builders. Up until that time I just did what I wanted to do...and what looked good to me. When I discovered Nick's Kayak forum I was amazed at the beautiful boats and all the good ideas. I am still amazed to this day. Anyway...my hatches are large, egg shaped, and are about 1/2" high. My kayak will be seeing some hard usage in rough water and portages. The nylon straps stretch when they get wet. They are quick on and off. I've found some shock cord eyelet ends that would work by kind of stitching an X (or hour glass shape) over the hatch and clipping the two eye ends together. I guess there are more options. We'll see what happens.
