I have the exact same concerns. With internal bungies, gear against the hatch can and does cause leakage. But it's not catastrophic.

I may add a single removable strap to each of my hatches. When playing in rough water, I'll surely have the strap in place and buckled. When I'm going to a "Show and Shine" type event, I'll pull the straps off and tell people the hatches are held on by magic!

I haven't seen a hatch that appeared to seal as well as Ted Henry's magnetic installation. A belt and suspenders approach here should be scarcely short of bombproof!
