I used the Minwax Helsman and it seems to have worked out just fine. I did put on five coats, very, very light sanding between coats to get out the bumps, then let it dry between coats for a few days. Only applied the varnish on days when the temp was higher than 50 and very dry. So far the boat is surviving the elements well.
