In some tests I did a few weeks ago I found that the waterbased Varathane bonded to poly very well. I tested it on 10oz from Tacoma Tent and Awning. It stayed very clear and tough against basic cratches and dings...

Also some weeks ago it was posted that some folks up in the northwest had sloshed some thinned finish around inside their boats to saturate the interior of the skin and they found that it even helped bring out a more transluscent affect. They used Varathane ( oil based I believe ) but I'm sure it would have the same affect with the waterbased. I think it was Robert Morris that posted this so you can check back and see... It was an interesting read.
