I like this idea alot too (great seal, bombproof), and dislike it for the same reasons (knob on deck's not great). What about making the knob a fairly flat disk, with a couple of holes in it to turn, ala an old telephone dial? Probably need a slice to adapt the deck curve too (thinking like a compass mount), but a decent carver could get something that'd look nice and be low profile. Some real talent could probably recess such a knob. Or maybe work out something like the winder on a chalkline reel?

Right now, it's all concept for the next boat. Current boat has magnet hatches in the bulkheads. Why magnets? because they're easy to operate with the long reach up front, and an easy (surface-mount) install.
