I'm in the process of making a "hatch opener that will allow mw to keep thing as they are but aid me in hatch removal when needed. What I have done is cut a piece of ash 5" long 3/4" wide and 1/4" thick, cut a 32 degree angle through the width of one end, drilled a hole in the other, and rounded all the edges. It will be coated with epoxy to seal it, and will be used to pry off the hatch when finger won't do the trick.
I tell you all of this to ask if you can see any reason whay this wouldn't be a good idea. I have thought through it from my "first time" perspective, but would really appreciate the imput of someone more experienced.
