: Tom, that's is awesome! Heck, I even like the coaming You changing that
: 'cause it's too heavy? Or 'cause it's not elegant enough?
Normally, I use an HDPE 1/2" thick baseplate under the skin,
and a HDPE 1/2"coaming with a 1/8" lip. The temp one in the
pics yesterday, didn't have a lip. On this boat, the coaming
base plate will stay the same, but just for fun, I want to
make the one piece coaming out of Carbon fiber. More than
anything else, it's just an opportunity to try somehing new.
I've layed up fiberglass seats before, and miscellaneous
fittings, so it should be similar work. Considering the
price difference, fiberglass would have been fine.
And yes, Carbon fiber is lighter than HDPE, though, as
tested yesterday, I'd guess the kayak weighs under 30 lbs.
: Ideas ideas ideas... Well... Hmm... There must be some clear covering
: material that you could use... It seems to me that, in general, they are
: heavy, less UV resistant, more expensive and yada yada, but it would be
: awesome
If my sometimes foggy memory serves me correctly, I believe
that "Seavivor" makes a transparent hull as an option on their folders.
: Maybe my next boat'll be one of your designs Yeah, I've checked out your
: web pages plenty of times... I just want you to tell me that they're
: really simply and quick to build Or... Memory is failing me... Have any
: double designs? The SO wants both to paddle and to have a little one and a
: double would take care of all of that at once!
They are designed to be easy to build, and build times
should be well under 100 hours. That varies from person
to person. The frames are fairly easy, the skins,
and the extras like coamings, footbraces, deck rigging
take up a disproportionate amount of the time.
But, that's true of any kayak type.
Here is a link to a double that can also be assembled as a single.
