I did a Nick Shade style cockpit coaming on a Sea Spirit I built last winter. I used no glass on the lip which is several layers of oak. My coaming which is cedar has 6 oz cloth inside and out. When I laminated the lip on, I just coated it with several coatings of epoxy top and underside. It's very strong.

You could always glass from the inside of the opening up and over the lip and not try to curl it around and over the edge. (that's the tough part) If it's made of hardwood, it's really strong already. You're only adding abrasion resistance.
