In Response To: to respond, or not to respond, that's that...? (Myrl Tanton)

Myrl:

I felt somewhat the same thing as you. "What was that post about anyway!" I failed to see the benefit in it. Most of all, this KBBB is about sharing ideas, tips and information...NOT secrets and upsmanship (I know someone who puts your boats to shame). His Dad can probably beat up my Dad too.

Being above average mechanically, and a fairly decent recreational woodworker, the end product of my efforts (with all of everyone's help and insite) exceeded even my expectation. And I have very high expectations! After seeing all the beautiful yaks posted and even for those with less elaborate designs and the bells and whistles...SO WHAT. We've built a boat with our own hands and are darn proud of the fact. It makes the 300+ hours for my double worth every minute of it.

I must say that the boats I've seen here are not just boats, but works of art. Sure we could all go out and by an off the shelf fiberglass colored yak, but that is not for the majority of us here. And nothing against those who buy production kayaks either. Many have restrictions of time, family, work facilities or maybe skill to craft such a piece. But one thing for sure, the pride that I have knowing that my two hands made this, is only exceeded by the faces of the people who admire the handiwork and can appreciate the amount of effort in creating such a boat.

Take pride in what you do, be satisfied in doing your best, and you will have many years of enjoyment to come. Keep on building!!!

DAVE
