I also had an issue with shoe size...(size 14's), Vaclav's designs seem to be for bigger guys. My boat was the Cape Ann, it was designed for an optimum paddler weight of 225lbs with a loaded capacity of 320lbs. It's a larger boat, but it handles really well, at least I think it does. You really can't go wrong with any of the proven designs out there, but I think you are on the mark with being concerned about boat size. I recently went to a wooden boat show and noted that I couldn't fit into many of the boats that were there. It made me feel kind like a giant at a kids tea party.
